WOOSTER, Ohio - The Sweet Briar College field hockey team (0-3, 0-0 ODAC) battled back twice but ultimately fell 4–2 to The College of Wooster Fighting Scots (1-1, 0-0 NCAC) on Sunday afternoon.
Wooster opened the scoring late in the first quarter. After junior goalkeeper
Reiyn Hart (Bridgton, Maine) made three saves during an early Wooster sequence, a goal at 12:51 gave the Fighting Scots a 1–0 lead. Sweet Briar also generated an early penalty corner, taken by first-year
Liv Werner (Fredericksburg, Va.), but entered the second quarter trailing by one.
The Vixens answered quickly in the second period. At 18:47, senior
Gigi Hutman (Bordentown, N.J.) finished a feed from fellow senior
Emmi Burdine (Huntington Beach, Calif.) to even the match at 1–1.
Sweet Briar kept the pressure on after the equalizer. Junior
Larkin Shire (Caroline County, Va.) forced a save from the Wooster goalkeeper at 19:43, and the Vixens earned consecutive penalty corners at 19:46 and 20:09. Burdine appeared to score during the sequence, but the goal was waved off because of a dangerous-play call.
Wooster regained the advantage at 26:00, a loose-ball finish from the middle of the circle. The Fighting Scots added another at 28:40, converting a 3-on-1 opportunity to take a 3–1 lead into halftime.
Sweet Briar came out energized after the break and limited Wooster to three third-quarter shots. Hart made three saves in the period to keep the Vixens within striking distance.
The Vixens capitalized on a late third-quarter penalty-corner sequence to close the gap. After Werner inserted corners at 44:23 and 44:47, Burdine converted a pass from junior
Megan Newton (Jaffrey, N.H.) at 44:53, firing home from the wing to make it a 3–2 contest heading into the final quarter.
Wooster extended its lead at 52:27. Hart remained busy down the stretch, adding three fourth-quarter saves and finishing with nine saves overall.
