The Sweet Briar field hockey team fell to Catawba today 6-1 at
Sewanee University.
The Vixens dominated the first half by getting on the board
first off with a corner from inserter sophomore Alexandra St.
Pierre (So. Hamilton, Va.) to junior Lindsay Eneguess
(Peterborough, N.H.). This effort proved to stand up through the
first half keeping in a tight game tied at 1-1.
It would appear that the second half belonged to Catawba who was
able to capitalize on the mistakes made by the Vixen team. Catawba
went on a roll, scoring 5 unanswered goals.
The Vixen defense stood strong facing 22 corners and 47 shots.
They were also able to only give up nine 16 yard hits
coming in, and were able to create 10 turnovers by Catawba
causing a free hit coming out of the defensive circle.
Leading the defensive effort again this week was sophomore
Goalkeeper Madeline Wilson (Orange, Va.) who was able to come up
with 18 saves on the day. Senior Sara Sheppard (Virginia
Beach, Va.) stood strong and came up with the ball many times
including on the goal line, making 3 defensive saves. Sophomore
Sarah Winstead (Apex, N.C.) also made 2 key defensive saves.
The Vixen attack was eager and thirsty creating a total of 12
shots on goal, and 6 penalty corners. "The girls looked great
today they are really starting to put the pieces together. We
are starting to focus more on the little things, realizing that
they are making a big difference. I am really proud of them,"
said Vixen head coach Jess Lamina.
The Vixens are back in action on tomorrow when they face Sewanee
at Sewanee, game time is 12 pm Central. GO SWEET!
