SWEET BRIAR, Va. --- The Sweet Briar field hockey team wrapped up the home portion of their 2011 schedule this afternoon taking on Shenandoah University, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference match at Thayer Field.  After a tightly contested first half, the Hornets scored two late goals to pull away with a 4-0 victory.

Amber VanHorn ('13/Slatedale, Pa.) scored the first goal of the day for the Hornets in the 16th minute.  She took a pass from an inserted penalty corner and drove the ball inside the far corner for her third goal of the season.

The score remained 1-0 into the intermission.  The Vixens pressed for the equalizer early in the first half, putting serious pressure on the Hornets goal.  Morgan Harris ('14/Chesapeake, Va.) and Sarah Cooper nearly combined for the tying score early in the second half, on a pretty play in the crease.  However, Ashley Cross ('14/Agawam, Mass.) was able to add an insurance goal in the 48th minute.  Two late goals from Sarah DeLuca ('13/Clarksville, Md.) accounted for the final score.

Vixen goalkeeper Madeline Wilson (Orange, Va.) made 14 saves in 63 minutes of play.  Junior Brooke Scott (Kemah, Tx.) come on in goal to play the final seven minutes for Sweet Briar.  The goalkeepers again led a strong defensive effort for the Vixens led by seniors Ariel Yoder (Clemons, N.C.) and Maggie McNamara (Arlington, Va.). Adelaide Hedge ('15/Winston-Salem, N.C.) also played a strong game, adding her third defensive save of the season.

Sweet Briar concludes its 2011 regular season slate on Thursday October 27, when they travel south to take on Lynchburg College at 6pm.
