Box Score Lynchburg, Va. --- The Sweet Briar field hockey
team closed out the 2011 campaign under the lights at Lynchburg
College on Thursday evening. The Hornets, ranked third in the
latest NFHCA poll, put the Vixens on the defense for much of the
game and were able to finish with a 12-0 victory.
The Hornets struck early on their home turf, scoring their first
goal exactly one minute into the contest. They added five
more goals in first half and continued their attack, scoring six
more times in the second stanza.
Sweet Briar goalkeeper Madeline
Wilson ('12/Orange, Va.) made eight save in the opening 20
minutes, before being replaced by junior Brooke Scott in
net. Scott was able to hold Lynchburg off the scoreboard for
the last 15 minutes of the first half, stopping 11 shots on
goal. She finished with 17 saves on the night, a career high
for the Kemah, Texas native.
Wilson winds up her career at Sweet Briar seventh in saves among
active goalkeepers in NCAA Division III, making 537 saves in her
four years in net for the Vixens.
Sweet Briar finishes the 2011 season 3-12. The
Vixens say farewell to senior stalwarts Wilson, Alexandra
St. Pierre (So. Hamilton, Mass.), Ariel Yoder
(Clemons, N.C.) and Maggie
McNamara (Arlington, Va.). Sweet Briar will return 10
letterwinners for the 2012 season.
