Box Score Salem, Va. --- The Sweet Briar field hockey team jumped out to a 1-0 lead nine minutes into their contest versus Roanoke College on Saturday. The Vixens ended the period trailing 2-1 and the Maroons were able to control the second half to claim a 7-1 victory.
Sweet Briar got on the board first when Loralei Whittaker (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) scored her second goal of the season. After Kate Bessette (Stafford, Va./ Mountain View) drew a penalty corner, the Vixens inserted the ball to first-year Hannah Oybkhan (Wilmington, Del./Caravel Academy), who fed the ball to Whittaker. The Sweet Briar junior ripped the ball into the right side of the cage to make the score 1-0.
Roanoke was able to tie the game seven minutes later on a goal by first-year Marceline Piek (Amsterdam, The Netherlands / Ignatius Gymnasium). The teams battled for the rest of the half until the Maroons were able to take a 2-1 lead on a penalty corner with no time remaining in the stanza. In the second half, Roanoke added to their lead, scoring five more goals.
For the Vixens, sophomore Adelaide Hedge (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mt. Tabor.) quarterbacked the the defense. Head Coach Jess Lamina noted "Though her efforts don't show up in the box score, Addie had an outstanding day on the field for us today."
Sweet Briar is off until Thursday, October 4. They will travel to Shenandoah University for an ODAC match beginning at 7 p.m.
