Vixens Battle Generals

Box Score

SWEET BRIAR, Va. --- The Sweet Briar field hockey team hosted Washington and Lee University in a mid-week matchup on Tuesday afternoon.   The Generals were able to outlast the Vixens by a 3-0 final score.

Washington and Lee was able to net three markers in the first half and that score would hold up for the match.  Senior Taylor Zusi (Summit, N.J./Kent Place) started the scoring with a goal in the 13 minute.  The Generals were able to add goals from Lauren Boone (Louisville, Ky./Collegiate) Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md. / Roland Park) before the first frame was over.

The Vixens received strong leadership from defenders Adelaide Hedge (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mt. Tabor) and Eve Mergenthaler (Litchfield, Conn./Litchfield).  Both Hedge and Mergenthaler were credited with defensive saves on the afternoon.  For Mergenthaler, it was her Conference-leading sixth defensive save.

"We were able to make the right adjustments at half-time to keep W&L from scoring in the second half", noted Head Coach Jess Gray.  Unfortunately, we were unable to finish on the chances that we earned."

Sweet Briar plays next in Harrisonburg, Va.  They will travel to Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday to take on the Royals at 12:00 p.m.
