Box Score Despite 17 saves from junior Katie Torretti, the Sweet Briar field hockey team lost 6-0 to first place Lynchburg College on Wednesday at Thayer Field.
The Vixens kept it close for most of the first half, despite Lynchburg's Meredith Bradsher opening the scoring in the eighth minute by chipping in the rebound and Torretti made an initial diving save on Danielle Kreider.
Torretti charged out early on a 3-on-1 and forced ODAC leading scorer Kelsey Link to rush a shot wide of the far post. She then made a good kick save on Bradsher off a penalty corner.
Sweet Briar had a chance at other end, as Hannah Oybkhan juggled the ball past a defender to win a corner. Eve Mergenthaler shot just wide off the insert.
Lynchburg opened the game up with two late first half goals however. Lacey Elliott assisted on both, getting down the right wing and crossing to GraceAnn Edgarton for a 2-0 lead and then feeding Megan Tillou on a penalty corner.
Torretti made two nice saves on Morgan Lammando early in the second half. She kicked away a close range shot from the right side, and then blocked a slap shot off another Hornet corner.
Elliott set up the fourth goal as well, putting a shot that deflected off Torretti and right to Lammando in front of the cage.
Molly Carr made it 5-0 on a rebound after Torretti made the initial save. Taylor Quillen capped the scoring in the 67th minute.
Sweet Briar falls to 1-13, 0-5 ODAC and will host Bridgewater on Saturday- Senior Day for Adelaide Hedge and Kimberly Orchowski. The Hornets, who have won the last eight ODAC championships, improved to 11-6, 6-0.
