Field Hockey Loses 6-2 to RMC After Entertaining Second Half

Box Score

Despite two second half goals from senior Kimberly Orchowski, the Sweet Briar field hockey team lost 6-2 to visiting Randolph-Macon on Wednesday.

The team hosted a Play4TheCure cancer fundraiser, raising money at the game and online, while recognizing a list of friends and family who have battled the disease during pregame.

The Vixens have raised $295 online, in addition to what was collected at the field today.

A wild second period featured six goals, including five straight from Orchowski and RMC's Carrie Jacobs (who turned in a second half hat trick).

Right off the second half restart Jacobs smacked in a pass from Haley McMahon to give Macon a seemingly insurmountable 3-0 lead.

The Vixens found a second wind however. Emily Dallas passed to Orchowski, and the senior scored on the rebound after Shannon McMurray stopped her first attempt.

Before that goal, Adelaide Hedge had redirected a waist-high shot just over the bar. The Vixens kept pushing to cut the deficit to one, with McMurray charging out to prevent an Orchowski breakaway.

Vixen first-year Soleiby Delcid came off the bench and stole the ball away from the last defender, with RMC's Kaci Payne getting back just in time to thwart the breakaway.

The Sweet Briar surge was finally stemmed by a second penalty stroke call for Randolph-Macon. After goalie Katie Torretti was ruled to have covered the ball, Jacobs scored despite the Vixen junior getting a piece of the shot with her stick.

RMC had taken a 1-0 lead in the first half on a penalty stroke from junior Kali Carroll.

Jacobs made it 5-1 with her second goal in less than two minutes, taking a pass from McMahon and turning around Torretti for the finish.

Orchowski then added her second, shooting from the outside left off Hedge's penalty corner.

RMC added one more 66 seconds later, as Victoria Cappadora cleaned up a rebound with under two minutes to play.

In the first half, Torretti saved Carroll twice in a row following a penalty corner. Dayze Gaulin then snuck a shot under McMurray, only for Mackenzie Turner to come up with the defensive save.

Randolph-Macon led 2-0 at halftime, following an outside shot from Kaitee Nicholas in the 26th minute.

Sweet Briar falls to 0-12, 0-4 and will travel to Ferrum on Saturday.
