Box Score The Sweet Briar College field hockey team took a lead into the final 10 minutes, but a pair of penalty strokes gave host Hood a 2-1 win on Thursday in non-conference action.
Rachel Lenihan scored on the Vixens' only shot in regulation, in the first half half. Allison McLamb got behind the Blazer defense and beat the goalkeeper, with Lenihan following up to tap it home.
Hood's Emily Richardson, who sits with Sweet Briar's Eve Mergenthaler among the top five active NCAA Division III leaders in defensive saves, recorded both Hood goals on penalty strokes to overturn the deficit.
With under 10 minutes remaining, SBC goalie Katie Torretti saved Shelby Amspacher, with Hood then earning a penalty corner. After two more Blazer shots missed, the hosts were awarded with a penalty stroke and Richardson put it away to tie the game at 1-1.
Hood's Taylor Piper had a great chance with 70 seconds remaining, but shot it wide after Torretti came sliding out to force the miss.
The game went into 7-on-7 overtime and Hood earned a second penalty stroke in the 79th minute. Richardson scored it for the game-winner and a 2-1 final.
The Vixens held on throughout regulation, with defensive saves from McLamb and Emily Dallas along with six stops by Torretti.
McLamb blocked a shot by Hood leading scorer Alexis Briscoe early in the first half.
Briscoe nearly scored right after halftime, but Dallas was there on the goalline for another defensive stop.
Senior Kimberly Orchowski had a shot to win the game early in overtime, with her chance saved by Hood goalie Jessica Sedgwick.
The Vixens are 0-5 after a third one-goal loss, and will return home on Wednesday to play Frostburg State. Hood improves to 4-1 on the season.
