Eastern Mennonite senior Jenessa Derstine tied a D-III national record with five assists, as the Sweet Briar field hockey team opened up ODAC play at home with an 8-0 loss on Thursday.

Sophomore Allison McLamb led the Vixens with two defensive saves and a shot on goal. Goaltender Katie Torretti finished with 20 saves on the afternoon.

EMU got a hat trick from Camille Williams, with the Royal seeing nine other shots saved by Torretti or a Vixen defender. Derstine scored once and totaled five assists, two of which were deflected in by Lorraine Armstrong following penalty corners.

Armstrong opened the scoring five minutes in by playing a penalty corner and then running to the near post to redirect a slapper from Derstine. She would do the same in the second half for EMU's fifth goal.

Torretti made two saves on Williams' breakaway in the first half, with Rachel Lenihan also recording a defensive save in between.

Melissa Cox redirected Emily Augsburger's long hit for a 2-0 lead, and Williams finished off a Derstine pass with 15 seconds before halftime to give EMU a 3-0 advantage.

Derstine fed Williams again off a corner early in the second half for a 4-0 scoreline. Cox forced a defensive stop by McLamb, and then a diving save off the stick of Torretti.

The Royals struck four times in under 12 minutes late in the contest. Torretti stopped Derstine twice, but Williams finally finished off the rebound for a 6-0 lead.

Derstine then got to the left endline and chipped a shot over Torretti, with Emily Musselman knocking it home.

Sweet Briar falls to 0-9, 0-1 and will travel to Roanoke next Wednesday.
