Box Score AMHERST, Va.- Sweet Briar field hockey played host to Ferrum College on Saturday afternoon for Senior Day. The visiting Panthers came from behind to win 3-1.
Before the game, the team's seven seniors and their families were honored for their contributions and dedication to Sweet Briar and the field hockey program. Today marks the final game for Reba Gagne, Jess Heiser, Hannah Oybkhan, Megan Johnston, Eve Mergenthaler, Molly Van Buren and Katie Torretti.
The Vixens play a very strong first half and went into halftime with a 1-0 lead, thanks to a goal from Amanda Terry. Oybkhan earned an assist on the goal after setting up the play off a corner.
Minutes before Terry's goal, the Panthers had a chance to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty stroke. Kasey Sheets took the shot, but mishit it and sent a slow roller to Torretti who was able to pounce on it and prevent it from rolling into the goal.
The game would remain 1-0 until the 60th minute of play when Sierra Magdaleno scored three-straight goals in under ten minutes to secure the Panthers winning margin.
Rachel Rogers, Jessica Lusby, Terry, and Kayla Dooms all registered shots for the Vixen offense. Defensively, Torretti made 12 saves and Mergenthaler collected one defensive save. That marks the eighth game this season in which Torretti has made double-digit saves. And for Mergenthaler, she concludes an excellent career with 51 defensive saves, which ranks her in the top five for career defensive saves in Division III history.
