Box Score Sweet Briar, VA- Despite outshooting their opponents 20-13, the Sweet Briar College field hockey team fell in an overtime loss to start their season, falling 5-4.
Just three minutes into overtime, Megan Morales scored the game-winning goal for the Notre Dame of Maryland University Gators.
Morales also opened the game's scoring, giving the Gators an early lead less than five minutes into the game. Not to be outdone, Rachel Rogers netted back-to-back goals for the Vixens, with her first coming less than a minute after the Gators opened the scoring. Megan Johnston assisted on Rogers' second goal.
Forward Kayla Dooms added a goal midway through the fist half, giving the Vixens a 3-1 lead. The Gators fought back into the game, scoring three-straight tallies to hold a 4-3 lead seven minutes into the second half.
Reba Gagne scored her first goal of the season just two minutes later to tie the game at four, where it would remain until Morales' decisive overtime goal.
Katie Torretti came up with some big saves in cage for the Vixens throughout the day and finished with four saves total. Offensively, Hannah Oybkhan registered four shots and Johnston tallied three, including two on cage.
The Vixens finished with more shots on goal, 12, and penalty corners, 10, than the visitors despite coming out on the wrong side of the score sheet.
Next weekend, the Vixens will be at the Wilson College Invitational, playing games on both Saturday and Sunday. Sweet Briar begins play against the host Phoenix at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
