Hockey Battles With Notre Dame of Maryland

Box Score

SWEET BRIAR, Va.- Playing for the second time in three days, the Sweet Briar College field hockey team hosted Notre Dame of Maryland University on Saturday afternoon. The Gators proved to be too much for the Vixens, winning 5-0.

The Gators got off to a hot start, scoring three times in the first seven minutes. But then the Vixen defense stepped up and held Notre Dame in check the rest of the half. The visitors would add two more goals after halftime.

The Vixens were able to create multiple counterattacks throughout the game, but the Gator defenders stepped up and thwarted every attack. On the defensive end, junior Emily Dodson notched 11 saves in goal for the Vixens and both Kiley Jolicoeur and Mary Kate Bailey tallied defensive saves.

Walking the sidelines for Notre Dame was the familiar face of Sweet Briar alumane Hannah Obykhan. After playing for the Vixen field hockey, swim, and lacrosse teams last year, Obykhan graduted and is now an assistant coach for NDMU while pursuing her Master's Degree in nonprofit management.

Sweet Briar will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 11 when they host Cedar Crest College beginning at 11 a.m. from Thayer Field.
