Newman nets goal as Vixens, Tigers draw

SWEET BRIAR, Va. — For the third-straight season, junior Caylin Newman has a goal against the Trinity Washington Tigers, as Newman scored the match tying goal in the 84th minute of the Vixens' 1-1 double-overtime draw at the Sweet Briar Soccer Field.

The Vixens (0-10-1) started on the attack when first-year Maddie Wine (Stafford, Va.) forced Tigers (0-12-1) goalkeeper Emily Andino into a save in the fifth minute. The Tigers countered with six shots over eight minutes, resulting in a goal by Nikolay McKennis off an assist from Heaven Thomas.

Trinity Washington took the 1-0 advantage into the second period, but it was the Vixens who pushed the attack to open the second period. Firing 10 shots over the opening 30 minutes of the second half, including four placed on frame.

It was shot number 11 in the second period that led to a celebration for the Vixens as a loose ball in front of Andino was mishandled by the Tigers and fell to the feet of Newman (Bedford, Va.) who slotted her shot into the back of the net to even the game at 1-1 in the 84th minute.

A late attempt to win the match in the 86th minute by Sweet Briar junior Lera Cordner (Macungie, Pa.) was sent wide and sent the two sides to overtime.

The first overtime period saw the Tigers take a pair of shots, while Sweet Briar senior Lacey Tucker (Swansboro, N.C.) for Andino to make a save in the 100th minute of play.

Andino and Sweet Briar first-year Katelyn Meyer (Smithsburg, Md.) both notched one save in the second overtime, securing a 1-1 draw between the Tigers and Vixens.

Newman's goal was the first of the season for Sweet Briar and was the third goal of Newman's career against the Tigers.
