SWEET BRIAR, Va. — The Sweet Briar soccer goalkeepers combined for 19 saves on Saturday as the Vixens dropped a 6-0 decision to Ferrum in ODAC action.
Ferrum (7-2-1, 3-0-0 ODAC) notched the eventual match winner in the second minute when Frances Best sent a cross in from the right wing that was sent into the back of the net by the right foot of Alex Mattson.
The Panthers would score three additional first half goals as the two sides played the opening half 10-on-10.
"Given the situation today, starting with only 10, we were very mission-focused and I have to give it to our team," said head coach
Jason Capps. "I'm very proud of the mindset and fight we played with today. We were very organized throughout the match."
Both sides went to a full 11-player lineup in the second half, with the Vixens (0-8-0, 0-2-0) holding the Panthers from scoring again until the 62nd minute. An own goal in the 70th minute was the final tally of the match, giving the Panthers the 6-0 advantage on the scoreboard.
"If we can continue to be committed to this level of focus and are willing to learn from our mistakes, as you'll get punished for them in the ODAC, I think it's going to be an exciting few weeks ahead for this group as we get back to 100-percent," Capps added.
Sweet Briar junior
Sammy Holton (Arbutus, Md.) recorded 10 saves in the opening half, while first-year
Katelyn Meyer (Smithsburg, Md.) recorded seven in the second period.
The Vixens continue their four-match homestand on Wednesday, October 9, at 4 p.m. against Bridgewater.
