SWEET BRIAR, Va. — Sweet Briar junior goalkeeper,
Rosemary Austin, recorded 13 saves as the Vixens fell 3-0 in the season opener to the visiting Wilson Phoenix.
In the season opener for both teams, the Phoenix (0-1) opened the scoring early when Breann Sheaffer tallied off an assist from Allison Reber.
Wilson scored again with 16:26 on the clock as Jenna Carty found the back of the goal, while Chelsey Duncan scored the third and final goal of the day with 55:42 elapsed.
Austin started the year with 13 saves, and was helped out by a pair of defensive saves by her teammates.
The Vixens' first defensive save came on a penalty corner by Wilson, that saw a shot on frame by Alexis Alleman saved off the line by sophomore
Brigitte Gorman (Chesapeake, Va.). A second defensive save came with 50:30 elapsed, when Alleman saw her shot saved by first-year
Kaytee Reynolds (Sydney, Australia).
In the Vixens' opener, eight first-years made their collegiate debut. Seeing action as a starter for the first time was: Reynolds,
Ankita Bhurtel (Annandale, Va.) and
Nadia Bass (Virginia Beach, Va.). Making reserve debuts was:
Colleen Goodly (Yorktown, Va.),
Dara Keffer (Franklin, Va.),
Rae Rae Dillon (Hopewell, Va.),
Bella Fennell (South Toms River, Va.) and
Ingrid Kalwitz Blanco (Antofagasta, Chile).
Sweet Briar gets a short rest before returning to Thayer Field at noon on Saturday for a meeting with the Oberlin Yeowomen.
