Sweet Briar threatens in 2-0 loss to Oberlin

SWEET BRIAR, Va. — Junior Alexis Jones put four shots on frame and junior Rosemary Austin notched 11 saves in the cage as Oberlin earned a 2-0 win over Sweet Briar at Thayer Field on Saturday afternoon.

"It was a great opening weekend, we've got some really good connections and a strong foundation," said head coach Hannah Lott. "I can't wait to see what the season holds."

Austin (Commerce Township, Mich.) tallied two saves in the opening period for the Vixens (0-2) before Jones (Suffolk, Va.) called Oberlin (2-0) goalkeeper Julia Vincent into action in the early moments of the second period.

The 0-0 deadlock broke open with just over 20 minutes elapsed when a penalty corner by Libby Royer led to a shot on goal by Oberlin's Abby Rosenthal. Austin turned away Rosenthal, before another save was required off a shot from Meredith Warden. Austin's save rebounded back to Warden who fed Royer for a tap-in goal.

Jones tested Vincent twice more in the second period, while first-year Nadia Bass (Virginia Beach, Va.) saw her shot with a minute remaining in the period turned away by Vincent.

With 38 minutes elapsed, Fatima Escalera delivered a long pass to Hayley Segall who scored from close to three yards out. Four minutes after Segall's goal, Austin recorded a penalty stroke save on a chance by Reet Goraya.

Austin recorded three additional saves in the fourth period before time expired on a Yeowoman victory.

Jones finished the day with six shots and four shots on goal, while Bass and sophomore Brigitte Gorman (Chesapeake, Va.) both placed one shot on goal during the game. Austin finished with 11 saves on the afternoon.

Sweet Briar now hits the road for three-straight games, first heading to Lancaster Bible on September 6 for a 3 p.m. game in Lancaster, Pa.
