SWEET BRIAR, Va. — Junior
Alexis Jones scored the overtime game winner for Sweet Briar with 33 seconds remaining in the first overtime period on Saturday at Thayer Field, earning the Vixens a 1-0 victory over the visiting Hood Blazers.
"Today we were one team the entire game," said head coach
Hannah Lott. "I am proud of the team, they sacrificed themselves all day for the team."
The Vixens (2-4) and Blazers (1-7) spent a majority of the opening period feeling out the game, until in the 14th minute junior goalkeeper
Rosemary Austin (Commerce Township, Mich.) was called into duty with her first save of the afternoon.
Austin tallied save number two in the 20th minute, before Jones (Suffolk, Va.) forced Hood's Kenzie Blair into her first save of the day.
The 27th minute looked like an opportune time for a Hood goal, as the Blazers earned a penalty corner and caught Austin off her line. Mackenzie Rogers looked to take advantage of the situation placing her shot inside the far post where it was turned aside by sophomore
Brigitte Gorman (Chesapeake, Va.), who earned a defensive save for her quick response.
Neither team was able to find a goal in the second half of action, but with the sides trimmed to seven-on-seven in the overtime period it appeared that Sweet Briar or Hood would find the spacing for the winner.
Sweet Briar and Hood battled throughout the first overtime period, before Jones managed to find the back of the goal from roughly five yards in front of the goal mouth. Jones' goal came with 33 seconds on the clock.
The Vixens head under the lights of Amherst County High School on September 25 for a 7 p.m. start scheduled against Randolph-Macon.
