GREENSBORO, N.C. — First-year
Maddie Wine recorded 21 saves on Saturday evening, as the Vixens fell 8-0 to host Guilford in the Vixens' conference opener at the Armfield Athletic Center.
"We are very banged up, with three starters out today and we didn't come out inthe first half the way we planned," said head coach
Jason Capps. "Each goal came directly off things we had prepared for, so we were dissapointed with the start."
Guilford (4-4-1, 1-0-0 ODAC) took the lead over Sweet Briar (0-7-0, 0-1-0) in the fourth minute when Taylor Rumrill scored the would-be match winner off an assist from Sydney Moss.
The Quakers tallied three additional goals in the opening half, before tallying four goals in the second half to record an 8-0 home victory.
"We played the entire second half a player down and outside those first two minutes of the last half, we played hard to keep them scoreless for about 30 minutes," Capps added. "I was very happy with our focus in that 30-minute span."
Wine (Stafford, Va.) recorded the most saves by a Sweet Briar goalkeeper this season, with eight in the opening half and 15 in the second period for a career-best 21 stops.
"We will slowly get back to full strength soon and I'm looking forward to how we put these lessons learned while facing adversity into action going forward," Capps said.
The Vixens are next in action on October 5, playing host to Ferrum at 4 p.m., the first of four-straight home matches at the Sweet Briar Soccer Field.
