AMHERST, Va. — Sophomore Kaylah Bailey recorded the first hat-trick of her collegiate career on Saturday afternoon as the Vixens fell 14-5 at Amherst County High School to the visiting Huntingdon Hawks.
Huntingdon (2-0) opened the scoring nearly five minutes into the game when Shelby Barrett scored off of a Savannah Ryan assist.
The Vixens (0-2) evened the score a few seconds later when senior Victoria Lawson (Shipman, Va.) assisted on Bailey's (Virginia Beach, Va.) first goal of the day.
The Hawks took off on a five-goal run capped by the eventual game-winner by Kailey Laudicina with 9:12 remaining in the opening half.
Huntingdon's run was ended when Lawson scored a free position goal with 8:11 left in the first half.
Huntingdon would take an 8-4 lead into halftime, as the Vixens picked up goals three and four from Bailey and first-year Zerah Chase (Virginia Beach, Va.), respectively.
Huntingdon would score six of the games seven second-half goals with Bailey completing her hat trick with 5:20 remaining in regulation.
Huntingdon's Laudicina led all scorers with six goals, while Bailey led the Vixens with three.
First-year Maddie Schulman (Houston, Texas) led the Vixens with seven ground balls, while Bailey led the Sweet Briar field players with four. Lawson led the Vixens with four draw controls and five caused turnovers.
Schulman tallied 12 saves in goal, while Huntingdon's Morgan Coppini stopped 10 for the Hawks.
Sweet Briar is set to continue its February homestand on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. opening draw scheduled against Southern Virginia.
