SWEET BRIAR, Va. — Sophomore
Kaylah Bailey led Sweet Briar with a hat trick and an assist as the Vixens dropped a 16-8 decision to Ferrum on Tuesday afternoon at the Sweet Briar Lacrosse Field.
Sweet Briar (0-4) took the initial lead just under three minutes into the game when senior
K. Mullins (Richmond, Va.) scored the first goal of the day. Ferrum (2-0) responded with six-straight goals to lead the Panthers to a 6-1 advantage with 13:59 remaining in the opening half.
Bailey (Virginia Beach, Va.) notched her first tally of the afternoon when she scored off a free position opportunity. The Panthers answered less than two minutes later to take a 7-2 lead into the final minute of the opening half.
With 52 seconds remaining in the first half, first-year
Zerah Chase (Virginia Beach, Va.) collected a pass from Bailey and scored to take a 7-3 score line into the halftime break with the Panthers ahead of the Vixens.
Senior
Victoria Lawson (Shipman, Va.) opened the second half scoring off an assist from Chase, before the Panthers rattled off six-straight goals, including the eventual game winner when Nia Pettiford scored to give the Panthers a 9-4 advantage.
Sweet Briar would finish the game with goals in the final five minutes from Chase, Mullins and a pair from Bailey to take the final score line to a 16-8 Panthers advantage before the game was ended early due to availability of sunlight.
Lawson led the Vixens with eight draw controls, five ground balls and five caused turnovers.
Junior
Sydney Campbell (Amherst, Va.) recorded nine saves and picked up five ground balls in goal for the Vixens.
The Vixens hit the road for the first road game of the season on Sunday as Sweet Briar visits Salem for a 1 p.m. first draw.
