Vixens best Spirits for first win of 2020

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Sweet Briar sophomore Kaylah Bailey scored a career-high five goals, including the game-winner as the Vixens picked up their first victory of 2020 in an 11-9 decision over Salem College at Varsity Field on Sunday afternoon.

After Salem's (1-2) Cara James scored the opening goal of the day, the Vixens (1-4) rattled off four-straight goals and never looked back as the Vixens led for nearly 50 minutes of play.

Bailey (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored Sweet Briar's opening goal from a free position opportunity, before assisting on the first of two-straight goals from senior K. Mullins (Richmond, Va.). 

Senior Victoria Lawson (Shipman, Va.) scored the Vixens' fourth goal of the game before the Spirits cut the deficit to 4-2 with 11:11 left in the opening period.

Mullins and Bailey scored back-to-back tallies to take the lead to 6-2 before Anzley Kemmerer scored for Salem to take the two sides into halftime with the Vixens leading 6-3.

Lawson opened the scoring int eh second half, but the Spirits answered with a pair of goals less than a minute apart. 

First-year Zerah Chase (Virginia Beach, Va.) gave Sweet Briar the 8-5 advantage before Bailey finished her hat-trick with 24:32 left in regulation as Sweet Briar's lead grew to 9-5. 

Salem replied with a pair of goals before Bailey scored the would-be game-winner off an assist from Lawson with 9:40 remaining on the clock and the scoreline sitting at 10-7.

Bailey would add her fifth and the Vixens' final goal of the day with 8:13 to go. Salem scored two additional goals before time expired on the 11-9 Sweet Briar victory.

Bailey's five goals give the sophomore a team-high 16 goals on the season.

In goal, Sweet Briar junior Sydney Campbell (Amherst, Va.) picked up her first collegiate victory in a seven-save performance.

First-year Maddie Schulman (Houston, Texas) and Mullins led the Vixens with five ground balls each, while Lawson led Sweet Briar with five draw controls. On the defensive end, Mullins led the Vixens with five caused turnovers.

Sweet Briar is scheduled to play host to Southern Virginia on Thursday with the opening draw scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the Sweet Briar Lacrosse Field.
