Bailey nets nine in loss to Cavaliers

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. — Sweet Briar opened up its spring break road trip on Saturday with a nine-goal performance by sophomore Kaylah Bailey in a 16-14 loss at Montreat's Howard Fisher Memorial Field.

The opening half saw the two teams combine for 20 goals, with Bailey (Virginia Beach, Va.) scoring five of the Vixens' (1-6) eight first-half strikes.

Seniors Victoria Lawson (Shipman, Va.) and K. Mullins (Richmond, Va.) combined for three opening half goals, with Lawson tallying twice in the first half.

Bailey opened the second half scoring as the Vixens looked to march back against Montreat (1-4).

A pair of Cavalier goals followed Bailey's score before Mullins tallied for the second time in the game.

Montreat scored twice more and put the game out of reach, despite a third Mullins goal and three additional scores from Bailey in the final 18 minutes of play.

Bailey finished with a career-high nine goals, the most by a Vixen since Sam Schwartz scored eight in a 16-6 win at North Carolina Wesleyan on April 3, 2011.

Lawson finished the day with four assists, while first-year Maddie Schulman (Houston, Texas) led the Vixens with five ground balls.

Bailey nabbed six draw controls, while Schulman led Sweet Briar with seven caused turnovers. Junior goalkeeper Sydney Campbell (Amherst, Va.) tallied five saves in goal for Sweet Briar.

The Vixens return to action on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Brenau in Gainesville, Ga.
