HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Sweet Briar senior Emily Wandling's dominant win at No. 3 singles proved the match clincher as the Vixens bested Mount Union 7-2 at the Hilton Head Island Beach and Tennis Resort on Sunday morning.
The Vixens (3-1) opened PTR Spring TennisFest in doubles play as the duo of Emily Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) and first-year Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) blasted Mount Union's (2-3) top pair 8-0.
The Purple Raiders took the win at No. 3 doubles, but Sweet Briar answered with an 8-4 win at No. 2 as first-years Allison Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) and Kate Kotany (Erd, Hungary) topped MacKenzie Cavalier and Trisha Kohut.
Singles action opened at No. 2 with Allison Wandling defeating Cavalier 6-1, 6-0, while de Souza earned the 6-0, 6-1 win over Cora Shane at No. 1.
The morning was decided at No. 3 singles where Emily Wandling cruised to the 6-0, 6-0 victory over the Purple Raiders' Sierra Beighey.
In the lone three-set match of the day, Kotany fell 3-6 in the opening set before battling to a 6-3 win in the second. Kotany rolled to victory over Kohut in the third-set tiebreaker by a score of 10-2.
Sweet Briar clinched the 7-2 victory at No. 5 singles, where senior Lacey Tucker (Swansboro, N.C.) won a battle against Andrea Dietz by a score of 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.
The Vixens matchup next with Rhodes at the Evian Tennis Center in Hilton Head Island on March 10 at 9 a.m. The Lynx are currently the No. 10 team in the Atlantic South region.
