FREDERICK, Md. – Sweet Briar field hockey (12-6, 3-3) fell to the Hood Blazers (5-12, 0-8 MAC) in a shootout, ending today's match with a score of 3-2.
Junior
Ingrid Kalwitz Blanco (Antofagasta, Chile) would break the scoreless match 29 seconds into the second quarter off an assist from first-year
Lara Jost (Würzburg, Germany) in a well-executed penalty corner play.
Hood responded to Sweet Briar's lead seven minutes later before quickly pulling out to a 2-1 lead at the 26:30 mark of the game.
Sophomore
Brynna Hughes (Richmond, Va.) beat the Blazers goalkeeper with less than two minutes left in the third quarter for her team-leading 14th goal of the season. Overtime was needed after a scoreless fourth quarter left the game tied up at two.
Hughes had the lone shot in the first overtime period blocked and with four shot attempts unsuccessful for the Vixens in the second overtime, the match headed to a shootout.
Senior
Janie Bolling (Hereford, Md.) stopped Hood's first shootout attempt and on the first shot attempt, sophomore
Avery Jones (Union, Conn.) found the back of the goal for the 1-0 lead. However, Sweet Briar would not have any more successful conversions and the match closed out with a victory in Hood's favor.
