CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Sweet Briar field hockey (13-8, 4-3 CSAC) fell to the No. 1 seed Wilson Phoenix (17-0, 7-0 CSAC) 1-0 on Wednesday to end an extremely successful season.
The No. 4 seed coming into the match, the Vixens' 13-7 record was the winningest season since 2000. Additionally, it was announced earlier today that head coach
Hannah Lott was named Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Coach of the Year, sophomore
Brynna Hughes (Richmond, Va.) earned the title of CSAC Rookie of the Year and eight members of the team captures All-CSAC honors.
The Vixens defense held strong throughout the game, but in particularly in the first quarter where they held Wilson scoreless on six shots and thwarted two penalty corner opportunities.
The Phoenix's only goal of the match came in the seven minutes into the second quarter.
With three minutes remaining in the match, first-year
Ashley Maggiora (Hollister, Calif.) subbed in goal on a penalty stroke opportunity and successfully made the save to keep Sweet Briar in the game.
Maggiora's save fired up the Vixens offense but time would expire with the Phoenix still leading 1-0.
On the Vixens' performance today and the future of the program Head Coach
Hannah Lott stated, "Team 101 was prepared for the challenge today. We shut down the Wilson's potent offense and fought to the end. It was a first look into what it takes to compete in the CSAC playoffs. We can't wait for our next opportunity".
Highlights
- Wilson ranks second in the nation with a goal scoring average of a little over five goals per game and has only been held to one goal one other time this season.
- Senior goalkeeper Janie Bolling (Hereford, Md.) backstopped the defense through 60-minutes.
- Sophomore Avery Jones (Union, Conn.) led the team in shots.
