SWEET BRIAR, Va. — In the dual season opener, the Sweet Briar tennis team coasted to an 8-1 victory over Pfeiffer at the Dennis Van Der Meer Tennis Center on Friday morning.
Sweet Briar (1-0) opened the day with a dominant 8-0 win by sophomores Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) and Allison Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) against Pfeiffer's (0-1) Sydney Gray and Darby Sherrill at No. 1 doubles.
No. 2 doubles saw first-year Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and sophomore Kate Kotany (Erd, Hungary) recover from an early deficit to cruise to an 8-3 victory.
Earning their first victory as a pairing, junior Alexia Alfaro (Laredo, Texas) and senior Ruth Lechner (Baltimore, Md.) battled to an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles to earn the Vixens a sweep in doubles action.
Singles play opened with Guilarte earning a victory at No. 4 after winning 6-3 in the opening set before her opponent retired in the second set. Guilarte led in the second set before the retirement of her opponent.
Wandling clinched the victory for Sweet Briar at No. 2, where she eased to victory over Gray, 6-0, 6-1.
Kotany picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3, while de Souza earned a big 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 over Pfeiffer's Anna Branson.
Sweet Briar's final team point came via Alfaro at No. 5, where the junior picked up her first victory as a Vixen by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
Sweet Briar is scheduled to hit the road for a noon meeting with Methodist on Sunday, February 28, in Fayetteville, N.C. Visiting spectators are not permitted at Methodist.
