SWEET BRIAR, Va. — Sweet Briar sophomore Kaylah Bailey and first-year Sarah Southard scored for goals each as the Vixens fell 14-13 to Randolph on Thursday at the Sweet Briar Lacrosse Field.
Randolph (1-2) opened the scoring 59 seconds into the game when Sarah Perry scored her first of eight goals on the afternoon.
After a second WildCat goal, Sweet Briar (0-5) sophomore Zerah Chase (Virginia Beach, Va.) brought the Vixens back within one as she scored with 26:48 left in the opening half.
Southard (Culpeper, Va.) struck less than a minute later to knot the game at 2-2.
Following a pair of Randolph tallies, Bailey (Virginia Beach, Va.) converted a free position opportunity for her first goal of the day. Bailey scored a second goal to take the scoreline to 7-4 in the visitors' advantage. Bailey's second goal came off an assist from first-year Jess Roberts (Woodbury, N.Y.).
Randolph scored twice more to take a 9-4 lead into the final minute of the opening half before Sweet Briar junior Sarah Schindler (Charlotte, N.C.) scored off a free position opportunity to send the teams to halftime with the Vixens down 9-5.
Southard and the Vixens opened the second half with three-straight goals, starting with a goal from Southard off a Roberts assist with 27:15 on the clock.
Two minutes later, Southard found the back of the net on a free position chance just moments before Bailey assisted on Chase's second goal of the day and pulled the Vixens within one of Randolph.
The WildCats answered with three-straight goals to extend their lead to 12-8, before another three-goal run for the Vixens pulled Sweet Briar within one goal of Randolph.
Sweet Briar's run opened with the first collegiate goal of first-year Amber de Villers' (Edison, N.J.) career before Bailey and Southard tallied once again. Southard's fourth goal was her sixth of the season.
Perry struck again for the WildCats with 4:51 remaining, to extend the Randolph lead to 13-11. Bailey's eighth goal of the season and fourth of the game again brought the Vixens within one with 2:24 remaining in regulation.
Randolph answered Bailey's goal with one of its own, but the two-goal advantage was short-lived as Bailey assisted a Schindler goal to close out regulation with Randolph escaping with a 14-13 victory.
Bailey and Southard led the Vixens with four goals each, while Perry finished with eight for Randolph. Bailey and Roberts both recorded two assists each for Sweet Briar.
In the field, junior Ingrid Stacia (Richmond, Va.) led the Vixens with four ground balls, senior Madison Harpham (Monroe, Va.) led with five caused turnovers and Bailey snagged seven draw controls for Sweet Briar.
First-year Kat Navarro (Carlsbad, Calif.) tallied five saves in goal for Sweet Briar.
The Vixens hit the road on March 13 for a 5 p.m. first draw against Wilson College. The Vixens and Phoenix are set to meet at Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, Pa.
