SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — Sweet Briar sophomore Kaylah Bailey finished the night with five goals as the Vixens earned an 8-5 victory over Wilson, hosted by Shippensburg University at the Robb Sports Complex on Saturday.
Wilson (0-1) got the scoring started 30 seconds into the game when Danielle Stafford found the back of the net, but first-year Sarah Southard (Culpeper, Va.) delivered an assist on Bailey's (Virginia Beach, Va.) first goal of the night with 22:58 left in the first period to tie the game at 1-1.
Junior Sarah Schindler (Charlotte, N.C.) scored an unassisted goal with 19:17 left in the first half, while first-year Jess Roberts (Woodbury, N.Y.) found the back of the net with five minutes remaining before halftime to give Sweet Briar (1-5) a 3-1 lead.
Wilson broke the Sweet Briar scoring streak to pull the scoreline to 3-2 in Sweet Briar's favor, but Bailey notched her second goal of the game with 1:52 left in the first half to send the teams to the break with Sweet Briar holding the 4-2 advantage.
The Phoenix opened the second half scoring to pull within one, but Bailey rattled off three-straight goals over the next ten minutes giving the Vixens a 7-3 lead.
Senior Madison Harpham (Monroe, Va.) added an insurance goal to the Vixens total with 13:03.
Wilson recorded a fourth goal before time expired on the Vixens 8-4 road victory.
Bailey led the Vixens with six ground balls and 10 caused turnovers.
Sweet Briar heads to Ferrum on Saturday, March 20, for a 1 p.m. opening draw against the Panthers.
