Vixens win at No. 1 doubles; Christopher Newport tops Sweet Briar

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — An impressive tie-break victory at number one doubles by sophomores Allison Wandling and Ruth de Souza highlighted Sweet Briar's trip to the Eyre Courts, as Christopher Newport topped the Vixens 8-1 on Saturday.

The Vixens' (3-2) lone victory on the day came at the top doubles spot where Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) and de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) battled throughout the match with Amanda Yermal and Tessa Trate before forcing a tiebreak and earning a big 8-7 (7-4) victory over the Captains' (2-1) top duo.

With their victory on Saturday, Wandling and de Souza's doubles record in 2021 improved to 7-0.

Singles spots two through six saw the Captains earn victories in straight sets, while de Souza fought at number one singles against Reagan Delp.

Delp won the opening set 6-4 before de Souza battled back to win 6-2 in the second set to force a thrid-set tiebreaker. In the final set, Delp escaped with a 10-7 victory to secure Christopher Newport's 8-1 victory over Sweet Briar.

Sweet Briar returns to Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Monday, March 13, with a 3 p.m. meeting with Shenandoah in Winchester, Va.
