WINCHESTER, Va. — Sweet Briar picked up its first 9-0 win since March 4, 2020, on Monday afternoon with a shutout victory over Shenandoah at the Lowry Tennis Courts.
In addition to being Sweet Briar's (4-2, 2-0 ODAC) first 9-0 win since March 4, 2020, the Vixens' 9-0 win over Shenandoah (0-1, 0-1 ODAC) was the first 9-0 road victory for Sweet Briar since October 1, 2018.
Double's action saw the Vixens jump ahead 3-0 on the host Hornets after dropping just one game combined over three doubles matches.
The Vixens first team point came when first-year Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and sophomore Kate Kotany (Erd, Hungary) toppled Madison Rogers and Kelly Hudak 8-0 at No. 2 doubles.
At the top spot in the doubles ladder, sophomores Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) and Allison Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) earned an 8-1 win over Madison Hansen and Lily Kimble. Wandling and de Souza's victory was the 24th doubles victory of de Souza's career, the ninth most in Sweet Briar tennis history.
The final doubles match saw the Vixens' third pair earn their first 8-0 victory as a duo as junior Alexia Alfaro (Laredo, Texas) and senior Ruth Lechner (Baltimore, Md.) topped Caitlin Bennett and Madison Hoilman.
A fourth team point fell Sweet Briar's way at No. 1 singles, where de Souza beat Hansen 6-1, 6-0.
Wandling clinched the match for Sweet Briar as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 over Kimble.
The scoreline moved to 5-0 in the Vixens' favor after Guilarte defeated Rogers 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4.
Alfaro made it 6-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Bennett at No. 5.
Junior Emily Wrenn (Franklin, Va.) picked up the first Old Dominion Athletic Conference singles victory of her collegiate career as she toppled Hoilman 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6.
Kotany finished up the 9-0 sweet for Sweet Briar at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Hudak.
Sweet Briar is scheduled to return home tomorrow, March 16, for a 4 p.m. match-up with Ferrum.
