Vixens stroll to 9-0 victory over Panthers

SWEET BRIAR, Va. — For the second-straight match the Sweet Briar tennis program earned a 9-0 victory, as the Vixens blasted past the visiting Ferrum Panthers at the Van Der Meer Tennis Center.

Sweet Briar (5-2, 3-0 ODAC) did not drop a single game, winning all three doubles matches 8-0 and all six singles matches 6-0, 6-0 against Ferrum (0-4, 0-3 ODAC).

Sophomores Allison Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) and Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) earned Sweet Briar's first-team point at No. 1 doubles, while at No. 3 junior Alexia Alfaro (Laredo, Texas) and senior Ruth Lechner (Baltimore, Md.) secured the second point for the hosts.

The doubles sweep was completed as first-year Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and sophomore Kate Kotany (Erd, Hungary) picked up a victory at No. 2.

Atop the singles lineup, de Souza earned the first singles point for Sweet Briar, while Guilarte clinched the match at No. 4.

Wandling topped Tennessee Phillips at No. 2 and Kotany toppled Emma Loughrey at No. 3 singles. Rounding out the Vixens' singles lineup with 6-0, 6-0 victories of their own was Alfaro at No. 5 and junior Emily Wrenn (Franklin, Va.) at No. 6.

With a victory at No. 1 doubles, de Souza continued her climb up the career doubles record list at Sweet Briar, picking up her 25th double win and moving to seventh all-time.

Sweet Briar's back-to-back 9-0 victories, is believed to be the first back-to-back 9-0 showing for the Vixens since April of 2002.

The Vixens are scheduled to play host to Randolph on Wednesday, March 17, for a 4 p.m. opening serve at the Van Der Meer Tennis Center.
