AMHERST, Va. — An overtime winner by senior Alexis Jones earned Sweet Briar a 2-1 thriller of a victory over Ferrum at Amherst County High School on Tuesday night.
The opening period saw a combined six saves between the two goalkeepers as Sweet Briar (1-2, 1-2 ODAC) senior Rosemary Austin (Commerce Township, Mich.) stopped a pair of Ferrum (0-3, 0-3 ODAC) shots, and her counterpart Mia Holmes turned away four Vixen shots.
The third period looked to be another scoreless affair until junior Brigitte Gorman (Chesapeake, Va.) redirected a pass into the path of first-year Brynna Hughes (Richmond, Va.). Hughes converted the opportunity in front of the net in the 43rd minute, for the first goal of her collegiate career.
Sweet Briar's lead vanished in the 52nd minute when Ferrum's Tatianna Roberts forced a defensive save by Sweet Briar sophomore Kaytee Reynolds (Sydney, Australia).
Following Reynold's defensive save, Roberts forced Austin to make a save, before tapping in the second rebound to tie the game at 1-1.
Neither team was able to break the deadlock in regulation forcing an overtime period that resulted in a penalty corner for the Vixens in the 65th minute. Holmes managed to stop a shot from Gorman, but the rebound fell to Jones (Suffolk, Va.) who slammed a shot into the back of the cage to give Sweet Briar the 2-1 overtime victory.
Reynolds finished the night with a pair of defensive saves, while Austin tallied three saves for the Vixens. in addition to Hughe's first collegiate goal, Tuesday saw Jones notch her first goal of the season.
Sweet Briar is slated to host Washington and Lee, for the first meeting between the Vixens and Generals since 2016.
