Vixens top Yellow Jackets for first time since 2011

ASHLAND, Va. — The Sweet Briar tennis team opened Old Dominion Athletic Conference play on Thursday with a dominant 8-1 road win at the Banks Tennis Center against Randolph-Macon.

Sweet Briar's (2-1, 1-0 ODAC) victory over the Yellow Jackets (0-1, 0-1 ODAC), was the first for Sweet Briar since April 2, 2011, snapping an eight-match losing streak to Randolph-Macon.

The Vixens cruised through doubles play, led by an 8-0 win at No. 2 by first-year Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and sophomore Kate Kotany (Erd, Hungary).

Sweet Briar's top doubles pair, sophomores Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) and Allison Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.), picked up an 8-1 win over Avery Smith and Grace Holderman to pick up a second point for the Vixens.

The Vixens completed a sweep of doubles at No. 3, where junior Alexia Alfaro (Laredo, Texas) and senior Ruth Lechner (Baltimore, Md.) earned an 8-3 win.

Singles play saw the Vixens earn five straight-sets victories, with de Souza earning the first win of singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Smith.

Wandling matched her doubles partner's singles score with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Holderman at No. 2 to clinch the Vixens' first conference win of the season.

At No. 3 singles, Kotany added another 6-1, 6-0 victory to the boxscore for the Vixens as she knocked off Daniella Hafner.

Guilarte took down Emma Nesselrodt 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4, while Alfaro picked up the Vixens' final point of the afternoon with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Adele Huffman.

In an exhibition singles match, junior Emily Wrenn (Franklin, Va.) earned an 8-6 win over Brianne Bock.

Sweet Briar is set to step out of conference play on March 7 with a non-conference trip to Roanoke at 1 p.m.
