SALEM, Va. — Sweet Briar junior Alexia Alfaro's victory at No. 5 singles clinched the Vixens' first win over Roanoke since 2011, as the Vixens scored a 7-2 non-conference victory over the Maroons on Sunday afternoon.
The Vixens (3-1) opened the day at the Elizabeth Campus Complex with a sweep of the Maroons (1-1) in doubles action, starting with an 8-1 victory at No. 2 by first-year Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and sophomore Kate Kotany (Erd, Hungary).
Sweet Briar's top duo of sophomores Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) and Allison Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) earned an 8-2 win over Jessica Kennedy and Lucy Collins to move to 6-0 on the season, while the Vixens' No. 3 pair of Alfaro (Laredo, Texas) and senior Ruth Lechner (Baltimore, Md.) battled for a tiebreak win 8-7 (8-6) to close out the doubles sweep for the Vixens.
Singles action saw Wandling cruise to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Collins at No. 2 before Alfaro earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Olivia Maccluen at No. 5 to pick-up the match-clinching point for the Vixens.
A sixth team point fell to Sweet Briar at No. 1 where de Souza toppled Kennedy 6-1, 6-0.
Sweet Briar's seventh team point came at No. 4 singles when Guilarte earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Margriet Bostoen.
In an exhibition singles match, junior Emily Wrenn picked up her second-straight exhibition win with a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
Sweet Briar's victory over Roanoke was the first for the Vixens against the Maroons since April 17, 2011, snapping a seven-match losing streak to Roanoke.
The Vixens are scheduled to meet Cairn at the Dennis Van Der Meer Tennis Center on Friday, March 12, at 5 p.m. Friday's meeting will be the first known meeting between the Vixens and Highlanders.
