BRIDGEWATER, Va. — Sweet Briar junior Brigitte Gorman scored the Vixens' lone goal on Friday evening at the Jopson Athletic Complex in Sweet Briar's 4-1 season-opening loss to Bridgewater.
The Eagles (1-0, 1-0 ODAC) opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Courtney Cooke tallied off an assist from Mayra Mejia-Guardado.
Sweet Briar (0-1, 0-1 ODAC) responded a little over 10 minutes later when first-year Brynna Hughes (Richmond, Va.) recorded her first collegiate assist when she fired a pass that was redirected into the back of the goal by Gorman (Chesapeake, Va.). Gorman's first-half tally was the first for the junior since her first-year in a Sweet Briar uniform.
Sweet Briar threatened to break the 1-1 tie throughout the second quarter with seven shots in the period and forcing Bridgewater's Brooke Hamm to make three saves in the quarter.
After taking a 1-1 score into halftime, the Eagles broke the deadlock in the 35th minute when Karinne Moyer scored the would-be game-winner.
Bridgewater tallied two fourth-quarter goals to escape with a 4-1 home win over the Vixens.
Gorman finished the evening with a team-high four shots, while senior goalkeeper Rosemary Austin (Commerce Township, Mich.) notched seven saves in the season opener.
The Vixens are scheduled to travel to Salem, Va. on March 12 for a 4 p.m. meeting with Roanoke.
