Vixens win first NCEA Single Discipline National Championship

WACO, Texas — With an opportunity to make history, the Sweet Briar equestrian team left no doubt as the No. 1-seed Vixens coasted to a 6-2 victory over No. 2 -seed Lynchburg to clinch the first-ever NCEA Single Discipline National Championship on Saturday afternoon.

The Vixens and Hornets opened up the day at the Extraco Events Center on flat, with Sweet Briar taking the early lead as junior Britt Larson-Jackson (Washington, D.C.) rode Puzzle to a 226-194 victory over Caroline Waters.

Lily Peterson (Ashland, Va.) continued an impressive run at the end of her senior season by posting the Vixens' highest flat score ever at NCEA Championships with a 228-189 victory over Lori Ohannessian on Tristan.

Sweet Briar took a 3-0 advantage when first-year Emmy Longest (Hanover, Va.) rode Rosie to a 221-186 win over Taylor Herzog, before the Hornets pulled a point back with a 225-136 in on Oki by Kelley McCormick.

After a break in the action, as the dual discipline championship's flat competition took place, the Vixens and Hornets headed back to the ring for fences.

Senior Katie Balding (Williamsburg, Va.) kicked off the scoring for the Vixens over fences with a 249-215 win on Bentley over Jacqi Needle.

The next Sweet Briar point clinched the National Championship as Peterson posted again posted the highest score by a Vixen at NCEA Nationals, this time over fences. Peterson rode Chapman to a 253-236 victory over Ohannessian.

First-year Rachel Perry (Rockville, Va.) added a final point to the score sheet for Sweet Briar with a 206-120 victory on Java over McCormick.

The Vixens not only topped the Hornets 6-2 on team points but 1710-1574 on raw score.

Peterson was named the Equo Most Outstanding Fences Performer (Single Discipline) and to the McClennan County All-Championship Team over fences.

Sweet Briar wrapped up the 2021 season 5-2 in jumping seat competition including a pair of victories over Lynchburg and a 7-2 win in March against Delaware State.
