DANVILLE, Va. — The Sweet Briar tennis squad wrapped up its non-conference slate on Thursday afternoon with a 7-2 road win over Averett at the Averett Tennis Complex.
Sweet Briar (12-5) took a 2-1 lead out of doubles play when sophomores Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) and Allison Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) knocked off Louise Hovhammar and Eleanor Crane 8-2 at No. 1 and the Vixens picked up a default victory at No. 3.
Singles play saw default wins for the Vixens at No. 5 and No. 6, giving the visitors a 4-1 lead entering singles play.
First-year Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) clinched the team victory for Sweet Briar at No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Averett's (9-6) Alejandra Garcia.
Sweet Briar's sixth team point came from Wandling, who battled for a three-set victory over Crane, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8).
No. 1 singles saw de Souza fight for a two-set victory, topping Hovhammar 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.
Sweet Briar's regular season comes to a close on Friday, April 23, with a 4 p.m. home conference match against Virginia Wesleyan.
