SWEET BRIAR, Va. — The Sweet Briar tennis team wrapped up the regular season in style with a 9-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan at the Dennis Van Der Meer Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
The Vixens (13-5, 7-2 ODAC) opened the day against the Marlins (8-6, 7-3) with an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles by junior Alexia Alfaro (Laredo, Texas) and senior Ruth Lechner (Baltimore, Md.).
Sweet Briar's top doubles duo of sophomores Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) and Allison Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) earned an 8-3 win at No. 1 over Audrey Bally and Alexa Brewster.
With their doubles victory on Friday de Souza and Wandling earned their 35th and 28th career doubles victories, respectively. With 35 career doubles wins, de Souza sits fourth all-time at Sweet Briar, while Wanddling is sixth with 28. The victory also marked the 19th doubles victory of the season for de Souza which is third-best at Sweet Briar, while Wandling is now fourth all-time at Sweet Briar with 18 doubles wins on the season.
Doubles action concluded when sophomore Kate Kotany (Erd, Hungary) and first-year Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) completed the Vixens' doubles sweep with an 8-3 win at No. 2.
Singles action got underway as de Souza knocked off Brewster 6-0, 6-1, earning her 16th singles victory of the season.
Guilarte clinched the Vixens' team victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4.
Wandling was the next Vixen to finish their match with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 over Christine Zalameda. Wandling's win, like de Souza's, was her 16th of the season, which puts the pair in a tie for fourth-most single-season wins in school history. Wandling's singles victory was also the 29th of her collegiate career, which is the eighth-most by a Sweet Briar tennis player in program history.
Kotany picked up the 27th singles victory of her collegiate career with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Bally at No. 3.
The No. 5 singles spot saw Alfaro topple Shannon Lewes 6-2, 6-1, while Lechner closed out the day for Sweet Briar with a 6-4, 6-3 wit at No. 6 over Amanda Stegemann.
Friday's 9-0 victory saw the Vixens combined singles victories reach 82 and total doubles victories reach 44. With 44 combined doubles victories, the Vixens tied the previous school record from the 2010 season.
The Vixens are set to take part in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament, which gets underway on Tuesday, April 27. Sweet Briar's opponent and date of competition in the ODAC Tournament will be announced in the upcoming days.
