BLUEFIELD, Va. — A day after close defeat in conference action, Sweet Briar stepped away from the ODAC and cruised to a 7-0 victory at Bluefield City Park over the Bluefield Rams.
Sweet Briar (9-5) won the doubles point thanks to a default win at No. 3 for junior Alexia Alfaro (Laredo, Texas) and senior Ruth Lechner (Baltimore, Md.) and a dominant 8-1 win at No. 1 by sophomores Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) and Allison Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.).
Following their doubles victory, de Souza moved to fifth all-time at Sweet Briar for career doubles victories with 31, while is now tied for 10th all-time with 24 doubles victories.
First-year Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and sophomore Kate Kotany (Erd, Hungary) finished the doubles sweep for the Vixens with a 7-5 win at No. 2.
Singles action started with Lechner picking up a default victory to give the Vixens a 2-0 lead over the Rams (1-10).
Guilarte got cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 before Wandling clinched the match for Sweet Briar with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2. Wandling's victory, the 25th of her collegiate career, moved the sophomore into 10th all-time at Sweet Briar for career singles victories.
Kotany won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 and moved to 11th all-time at Sweet Briar in singles victories.
At No. 1 singles, de Souza won 6-4, 6-2 over Bluefield's Abigail Martin.
Sweet Briar secured the 7-0 victory at No. 5 singles, where Alfaro battled from behind to top Farah Schweers 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6).
Sweet Briar's trip to Bluefield added to the Vixens' combined wins total between doubles and singles action, giving Sweet Briar 93 combined victories in 2021, which is the most since a 95 combined win season 2011.
The Vixens return to conference action on Monday, April 12, with a 2 p.m. scheduled first serve at Emory and Henry.
