Field Hockey Blanks Notre Dame (Md.) 5-0

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – Sweet Briar field hockey (4-1, 2-1 CSAC) held the Notre Dame (Md.) Gators (1-3, 0-1 CSAC) scoreless on Saturday to come out on top 5-0.
 
This marks the third-straight shutout win by the Vixens and their second 5-0 win of the season.
 
Junior Colleen Goodly (Yorktown, Va.) got Sweet Briar on the board eight minutes into the game with her first goal of the season. In the second quarter, sophomore Brynna Hughes (Richmond, Va.) found senior Brigitte Gorman (Chesapeake, Va.) to increase the Vixens' lead to two and a save by senior goalkeeper Janie Bolling (Heredford, Md.) on a penalty stroke opportunity for the Gators ended the first half at a 2-0 lead for Sweet Briar.
 
After a scoreless third quarter, the Vixens came back hot in the fourth tallying three goals in 12 minutes. First-years Kailey McCarthy (Atkinson, N.H.) and Jolin Daughety (Williamsburg, Va.) and sophomore Avery Jones (Union, Conn.) all got their names on the scoresheet in the fourth quarter and helped bring Sweet Briar to its eventual 5-0 victory.
 
Highlights
  • This is the first time that the Vixens have won three-straight games since the end of the 2019 season.
  • Sweet Briar now sits in second place in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) standings.
  • With today's assist Hughes increases her season points total to 15.

Play will continue at Amherst County High School as the Vixens host Bridgewater on Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
