Field Hockey Captures First Win over Bridgewater in 21 Years

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – Sweet Briar field hockey (5-1, 2-1 CSAC) defeated the Bridgewater College Eagles (3-4, 0-0 ODAC) 2-1 in overtime tonight for its first win over the program since 2000.

Junior Colleen Goodly (Yorktown, Va.) gave the Vixens the 1-0 lead early in the game, scoring off an assist from junior Ingrid Kalwitz Blanco (Antofagasta, Chile) with only three minutes gone in the first quarter.

Sweet Briar would take that 1-0 lead into the second quarter, but the Eagles would come back to tie it up at one all.

A scoreless second half which saw senior goalkeeper Janie Bolling (Hereford, Md.) face five shots on goal led to the 1-1 draw after the end of regulation.

In overtime, breakaway by sophomore Brynna Hughes (Richmond, Va.) less than four minutes in led to first-year Jolin Daughety's (Williamsburg, Va.) game-winning goal for the Vixens.

Highlights
  • Sweet Briar last defeated Bridgewater 2-1 on Sept. 19, 2000, the first ever matchup between the two teams.
  • Daughety's goal is the first game-winning goal of her career.
  • Bolling stood strong in goal tallying six saves, her second-highest total of the season.
