AMHERST, Va. – Sweet Briar field hockey (3-5, 0-0 CSAC) dominated the Ferrum Panthers (3-6,0-1 ODAC) today, earning a 5-1 victory.
The Vixens went up early in the match as junior
Avery Jones (Union, Conn.) found the back of the net a little over three minutes into play.
A late first quarter goal by senior
Colleen Goodly (Yorktown, Va.) off a pass from junior
Brynna Hughes (Richmond, Va.) would put Sweet Briar up by two entering the second.
Sophomore
Kailey McCarthy (Atkinson, N.H.) scored the lone second quarter goal, putting the Vixens up 3-0 entering the half.
McCarthy tallied her second of the game less than two minutes into the second half of play to bring the game to 4-0. Sophomore
Giselle Vega's (Chesapeake, Va.) first collegiate goal at the 42:38 mark would put the score at 5-0.
With time winding down in the game the Panthers got themselves on the board, however, play would draw to a close three minutes later with a 5-1 score in favor of Sweet Briar.
Highlights
- Hughes earned her second assist of the day on McCarthy's first goal of the game.
- First-year Carlina Christy (Denver, Pa.) tallied the assist on McCarthy's second goal while sophomore Jolin Daughety (Williamsburg, Va.) had the helper on Vega's goal.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Maggiora (Hollister, Calif.) totaled six saves.
- Jones led the team in shots with 11.
