Tennis Sweeps Randolph-Macon, Averett

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – Sweet Briar tennis (10-2, 3-1 ODAC) closed out their five-match week with back-to-back 9-0 victories over Randolph-Macon (3-2, 1-2 ODAC) and Averett (2-3, 1-0 USA South) today at the Van Der Meer Tennis Center.
 
The Vixens started the day off with a clean sweep over the Yellow Jackets. Both pairings of de Souza/Wandling and Alfaro/Patino took down their opponents without dropping a single game. Caro/Simhambhatla secured the third doubles point with an 8-4 victory over Cifuentes/Johnston.
 
First-year Ana Patino (Medellín, Colombia) and junior Sofia Andrade (Latacunga, Ecuador) won their matches in straight sets in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively.
 
Junior Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) clinched the victory for Sweet Briar with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Grace Holderman.
 
Junior Kate Kotany (Erd, Hungary), sophomore Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and senior Alexia Alfaro (Laredo, Texas) never dropped more than two matches in a set, earning their victories by scores of 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-2, respectively.
 
The Vixens kept the momentum rolling against the Cougars with de Souza/Wandling easily handling Lippens/Lombardt, 8-2. Simhambhatla/Patino and Andrade/Guilarte added the team's lead with 8-6 and 8-7 (8-6) victories, respectively.
 
Kotany wrapped up her singles match against Alejandra Garcia first, winning by a score of 6-1, 6-0. She was followed closely by Guilarte who defeated L. Sjostrom Krook in the No. 6 spot, 6-1, 6-1 to clinch the victory.
 
Wandling handed Paula Ryhsen her second loss of the season in two sets by scores of 6-4, 6-3, while Patino also took down her opponent in two sets at the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 6-4.
 
Both de Souza and Andrade fought hard to earn the victory in three sets, winning by scores of 3-6, 6-3 1-0 (10-5) and 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (13-11), respectively to help the Vixens complete the sweep.
 
Highlights
  • Wandling, whose victories today help her remain undefeated this past week, handed Ryhsen her only singles loss to a non-ranked team so far this season.
  • Simhambhatla is perfect in doubles play with a 5-0 record with Maria Caro (Bogota, Colombia) and one victory with Patino.
  • Alfaro is undefeated in singles play with a 4-0 record.
What's Next
The Vixens will see action at Lynchburg and Southern Virginia on Tuesday, March 22 with matches starting at noon and 5 p.m., respectively.
