LYNCHBURG, Va. – Sweet Briar lacrosse (3-3, 0-0 CSAC) fell in a tightly-contested match to the Randolph WildCats (2-2, 0-0 ODAC) by a score of 13-12 today at WildCat Stadium.
Despite falling behind 3-0 to start the game, a goal from sophomore
Sarah Southard (Culpeper, Va.) with four minutes remaining in the first quarter would mark the last time the Vixens would trail by more than two.
Sweet Briar brought the game to its first tie when two-straight goals from junior
Zerah Chase (Virginia Beach, Va.) followed by a tally from sophomore
Brynna Hughes (Richmond, Va.) set the score at four-all early in the second.
Both teams would trade goals back-and-forth throughout the second quarter until two-straight goals from the WildCats to end the first half gave them the 8-6 lead.
The two-goal lead would not last long though, thanks to an unassisted goal from junior
Kaylah Bailey (Virginia Beach, Va.) which brought the Vixens back to within one.
After a flurry of more back-and-forth goals, Randolph gained the 12-9 upper hand until Chase found the back of the net twice with Sweet Briar playing a man up to bring the game to a nail-biting 12-11 score in favor of the home team with a little over six minutes left.
A late push from the team off the back of a goal from Chase, which was assisted by Southard, brought them within striking distance of the tie again. However, with two minutes remaining, the Vixens were unable to get past the WildCat defense for the game-tying goal and fell by a score of 13-12.
Highlights
- Chase tallied a career-high six goals in the loss.
- Both senior Ingrid Stacia (Richmond, Va.) and Bailey recorded five caused turnovers to lead the team and the game.
- First-year Valen Foster (Bushwood, Md.) totaled seven saves in her first collegiate start in goal.
