Lacrosse Gets Past Keystone, 10-9

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – Sweet Briar lacrosse (4-3, 1-0 CSAC) earned its first-ever Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) win today at Thayer Field, taking down the Keystone Giants (0-6, 0-1) by a score of 10-9.

The Vixens came ready to play today, scoring four-straight goals in the first five minutes to take the 4-0 lead. First-year Valen Foster (Bushwood, Md.) got the scoring party started for Sweet Briar, followed by tallies from juniors Zerah Chase (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Kaylah Bailey (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Sarah Schindler (Charlotte, N.C.).

Krista Strausser mounted the comeback for the Giants scoring two of her four goals in the game with time winding down in the first quarter to bring the game 4-2.

Sophomore Sarah Southard (Culpeper, Va.) would find Bailey to give the Vixens the 5-2 lead heading into the second.

Keystone would open the next quarter of play with two-straight goals before Chase and Maria Tomada traded goals back in fourth to end the first half and begin the second, bringing the game to an eventual 7-6 score.

With less than a minute left in the third, Chase tallied her fourth of the game off a pass from Sophomore Brynna Hughes (Richmond, Va.) to reinstate a two-goal lead for Sweet Briar. An additional goal from Southard a little more than five minutes into the fourth quarter would give the Vixens a much needed three-goal cushion.

Despite a late push by the Giants, the Sweet Briar defense held strong, only allowing two more goals to secure the 10-9 victory.

Defensively, sophomore Kate Navarro (Carlsbad, Calif.) totaled eight saves over the course of the game while first-year Kaitlyn Burns (Moneta, Va.) led the team with five caused turnovers.

Highlights
  • The Vixens currently sit atop the CSAC standings as the only team to have won a conference match.
  • First-year Trista Cleaves (Millville, N.J.) won a career-high nine draw controls.
  • Chase totaled six points in today's game, scoring four goals and tallying two assists.
