Lacrosse Closes Out Home Action in Loss to Montreat

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – Sweet Briar lacrosse (5-7, 2-3) played its last home game of the season today against Montreat (12-7, 4-3 AAC), falling to the Cavaliers by a score of 20-10.

The Vixens and the Cavaliers were evenly matched to start the game, with both teams swapping one-goal leads throughout the first 20 minutes of play.

Sophomore Sarah Southard (Culpeper, Va.) tied the match up at one less than two minutes into the game while senior Sarah Schindler (Charlotte, N.C.) and junior Kaylah Bailey (Virginia Beach, Va.) gave the Vixens 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3 leads, respectively.

Montreat began to pull away in the second quarter of play, scoring four straight to go up 7-4. Bailey's third goal of the first half helped the Vixens narrow down the deficit to four heading into halftime.

Schindler would find the back of the net twice in one minute with less than 10 minutes remaining in the third to bring the score to 12-7 in favor of the Cavaliers. Despite Montreat scoring three more, first-year Valen Foster would tally the first in her hat trick with seconds remaining in the quarter while playing a woman up to turn the momentum in Sweet Briar's favor.

A flurry of goals by the Cavaliers to start the fourth would help give the visiting team the cushion needed to survive a late surge by the Vixens off the back of Foster's completed hattrick, taking the game by a score of 20-10.

Both Schindler and junior Dani Peloso (Centreville, Va.) led the team and the match with three caused turnovers while sophomore Brynna Hughes (Richmond, Va.) picked up four ground balls.

Highlights
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Kat Navarro (Carlsbad, Calif.) registered 12 saves, her third-highest total this season.
  • Bailey led the team with four draw control wins and was perfect on free position attempts going 2-2.
  • Schindler's hat trick marks the first time the attacker has scored three or more goals in a single game over the course of her career.
What's Next
The Vixens will wrap up the 2021-22 regular season with a final conference matchup against Cedar Crest on April 30.
