SWEET BRIAR, Va. – Sweet Briar tennis (22-3, 9-1 ODAC) will head to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Women's Tennis semifinals after taking down the Bridgewater Eagles 5-0.
The doubles pairings of de Souza/Patino, Guilarte/Wandling and Andrade/Alfaro helped Sweet Briar start the match with a 3-0 lead. The teams won their matches by scores of 8-0, 8-1 and 8-7 (7-3), respectively.
In singles play, sophomore
Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and junior
Nikhita Simhambhatla (Hyderabad, Telangana, India) completed the sweep for the Vixens with match scores of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-2.
With Guilarte's win today, she becomes the program record holder for singles wins in a season with 23.
Highlights
- Junior Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil), first-year Ana Patino (Medellín, Colombia) and junior Sofia Andrade (Latacunga, Ecuador) were well on their way to victories with 6-1 wins in the first set.
- Junior Kate Kotany (Erd, Hungary) was up 4-1 in the second set when the match was declared over.
- Guilarte has won 15 of her matches this season without giving up more than one game in a set.
