Soccer Comes Up Short in Season Opener

WASHINGTON, D.C. -  Sweet Briar soccer (0-1-0, 0-0 ODAC) came up short in the season opener against Trinity (D.C.) (1-0-0), falling after a hard-fought 3-2 battle.

Senior goalkeeper Katelyn Meyer (Smithsburg, Md.) came up big off the bench to save a Tigers penalty kick to keep the match scoreless early on.

However, Trinity (D.C.) would capitalize on their next chance, finding the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

The game was tied up at one less than 10 minutes later thanks to a long pass from sophomore Jillian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) to her sister, graduate student Caroline Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) after an offsides call.

The first half of play came to a close with the Tigers up 2-1 thanks to a goal 10 minutes following the tie game.

The Tigers didn't let a second penalty kick opportunity go to waste, capitalizing less than 10 minutes into the second half to go up by two.

The Vixens mounted a late push and the Lewis sisters combined for another goal to bring Sweet Briar within one, but time expired with the score at 3-2.

"Although it wasn't the outcome we were looking for, the team fought until the final buzzer," Head Coach Kaitlyn Barbour remarked, looking back on today. "We have a lot of work to do as we start the season. I am excited to continue to watch these girls grow in the game".

Highlights
  • Meyer and sophomore goalkeeper Trista Cleaves (Millville, N.J.) split time in goal with Meyer recording 69:57 minutes and Cleaves 20:03.
  • The goalie tandem held Trinity (D.C.) to only three goals despite a total of 21 shots on goal being recorded.
  • C. Lewis tallied six shots on goal while junior Sophie Vargesko (Plum, Pa.) and Cleaves each had one.
