GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Sweet Briar College softball team (0-2) dropped both games in its season opening double header to the Guilford Quakers (2-2, 0-0 ODAC) today by scores of 7-0 and 11-0.
Game One
In their first-ever collegiate game, the Vixens defense held strong against a seasoned Guilford team.
First-year
Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) started her first game on solid footing, only allowing two runs through the first two innings. Following four tallies by the Quakers in the fourth, fellow first-year
Madyson Brown (Hurt, Va.) came into the game in relief.
While Smith forced five flyouts and five groundouts during her time at the mound, Brown backstopped the final two innings while allowing one run and forcing three fly outs and one ground out.
At the plate, first-year
Melanie Rees (Partlow, Va.) led the team with two hits over three at bats.
First-years
Victoria Tew (Hope Mills, N.C.),
Kaylie Hudson (Lynchburg, Va.) and Smith recorded one hit. All of Sweet Briar's hits in game one were singles.
First-year
Grace Pisenti (Madison Height, Va.) reached first base due to a walk twice while fellow first-year
Kaydin Williams (Richlands, Va.) was walked once.
Game Two
Guilford shot out to a quick lead with six runs scored in the first inning of game two. Despite falling behind early, starting pitcher Pisenti got back control of the game in inning two. Pisenti only allowed run one in the second inning and finished her time at the mound having faced 18 batters.
The Virginia native walked three batters and forced one flyout and one ground out. Brown, who stepped up for the second-straight game, held the Quakers to one run in the third before their offense broke through to score three in the fourth.
Brown faced an additional 10 batters in game two and totaled two fly outs and four ground outs.
Offensively, Smith recorded two hits for Sweet Briar. She earned two singles and also a stolen base as the designated player.
Hudson and Pisenti both reached first through walks once during the game.

- Both first-years Anna Smith (Rocky Mount, Va.) and Madyson Brown (Hurt, Va.) did not walk a single batter after facing a total of 42 batters through six innings.
- Sweet Briar's 7-0 loss to Guilford today marks the smallest margin of victory for the Quakers since 2015.

The Vixens will be back in action tomorrow for a doubleheader against Methodist at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
